Song to sheet music: every part of a song, written out

Song to sheet music, every part of it: most converters write down one instrument, but Midify separates the song into vocals, piano, guitar, bass and drums first, then writes each one out as its own part, lined up bar for bar in a full score with the chords above.

How to turn a song into sheet music

  1. 1

    Upload the song

A WAV, MP3, FLAC, AIFF, M4A or OGG file, up to 10 minutes long.

  2. 2

    Separate the instruments

The mix is split into vocals, piano, guitar, bass, drums and other. Keep the parts you want written out.

  3. 3

    Each part is written out

Every part is notated on its own, on a shared grid of bars, beats, key and chords detected from the whole song.

  4. 4

Print the score or the parts

Download the full score, a PDF per player, or MusicXML of the lot.

Why separating the song first matters on paper

In a full mix, the bass guitar, the left hand of the piano and the low notes of a synth all sit in the same range. A transcriber listening to all of it at once has to guess which instrument played which note, and on paper a wrong guess is obvious: bass notes in the piano part, piano chords stacked on the bass line.

Separating first gives every instrument its own recording to be transcribed from, and its own staff. It also means the drums never leak into the pitched parts as stray notes, because they are written on their own percussion staff.

Separation is very good but not perfect. A little of one instrument can bleed into another, which can show up as a quiet extra note. Those are usually among the notes marked as doubtful, so they are quick to find and delete.

Full score and individual parts

The full score puts every part on one page in score order, vocals at the top and drums at the bottom, so you can see how the song is put together. The parts give each player only what they need: the guitarist gets notation and tab, the drummer a drum staff with a legend, the pianist a grand staff. All of them share the same bar numbers, so a rehearsal can start at bar 33 without anyone counting.

A lead sheet from any song

Often you do not need every part, just the tune and the chords. Keep only the vocals and you get a lead sheet: the melody on one staff with the chord symbols of the whole song above it, the format a band or a jazz player reads from.

How to turn a song into sheet music by ear, or in minutes

Done by hand, turning a song into sheet music means listening a bar at a time, finding each note on an instrument, and writing rhythms down against a count. It is a great skill and slow work: an hour for a simple melody is normal. Converting the song here gives you that first draft for every part at once, so your time goes into checking and polishing rather than writing out notes.

Any song to sheet music works the same way, from a band recording to a piano ballad. For a single file or instrument, the audio to sheet music converter shows every option, including piano and guitar tabs.

Honest expectations for busy mixes

Writing a whole band out automatically is hard for every tool, this one included. Here is what to expect:

  • Vocals, bass and drums usually come out cleanest, because they are the easiest to separate.
  • A wall of distorted guitars and synths gives the most to tidy: chords may be thinner or busier than played.
  • Instruments that share a stem, such as strings and a synth pad in "other", are written on one part.
  • Words are not written under the vocal line yet.

Song to sheet music: questions people ask

Can AI turn a whole song into sheet music?

Yes: each instrument becomes its own part, and the parts are combined into a full score. Expect to check the busiest parts against the audio, which the editor makes quick.

Can I get just one instrument from a song?

Yes. Keep only the part you want, the piano or the bass line for example, and download it on its own.

Does it write the chords?

Yes. The chords of the song are detected from the whole mix and written as chord symbols above the melody, the same way they appear in a songbook.

Does it write the lyrics?

Not yet. The vocal part gives you the melody and the chords; add the words in your notation app if you need them.

How long does a song take?

Usually a few minutes for a 3 to 4 minute song, depending on how many parts you choose and how busy the queue is.
