Piano to MIDI, chords and all

Record yourself on an acoustic piano, or pull the keys out of a song, and get MIDI with every note of the chord, played as hard as it was played. Midify transcribes piano polyphonically and tidies the timing without flattening the performance.

How to convert piano to MIDI

  1. 1

    Upload a piano recording

A solo piano recording, a phone voice memo of you playing, or a song with piano in it.

  2. 2

    Every note, every chord

The piano is transcribed polyphonically, so full chords and two-handed parts come through.

  3. 3

Keep the feel or straighten it

Leave the timing as played, or quantize to a grid for a clean, programmed sound.

  4. 4

    Play it on any instrument

Export the MIDI and put it on a better piano, an electric piano, strings or a pad.

Uses for piano MIDI

Recorded a great take on an out-of-tune upright? Convert it and play the same performance on a concert grand sample. Wrote a chord progression on the piano? Turn it into MIDI and voice it for strings. Learning a piece by ear? See every note in the piano roll and slow it down.

Velocity and pedal

A piano part with every note at the same velocity sounds like a typewriter. Velocities are estimated from how loud each note is in the recording, so a soft passage stays soft. The sustain pedal is not written as a controller yet; notes are lengthened to match what you hear instead.

What makes piano harder

Piano is polyphonic and rich in overtones, so it is one of the harder instruments to transcribe well:

  • Dense, low chords with lots of pedal can produce extra notes an octave or a fifth away. The ghost-note slider removes most of them.
  • A clean, close recording beats a distant room recording.
  • A solo piano recording beats a piano buried in a full band; separate it first if it is.

Piano to MIDI: questions people ask

Can I convert a piano recording from my phone to MIDI?

Yes. Upload the voice memo (M4A works). A quiet room and the phone close to the piano give the best result.

Does it get the chords, or only the melody?

It transcribes every note it hears, so chords and both hands come through, not just the top line.

Can I export the piano as sheet music?

Not yet. Today the export is MIDI, which any notation app can import. MusicXML export is planned.
