How to turn a piano recording into sheet music

  1. 1

    Record or upload

A solo piano recording, a voice memo of you playing, or a song with piano in it (the piano is separated first).

  2. 2

    Every note, both hands

The piano is transcribed in full, chords included, and split between the right and left hand.

  3. 3

    Set how detailed it is

Pick the key, check the time signature, and move the readability slider from Simple to Detailed.

  4. 4

    Play it or print it

Fix anything in the editor, then download a PDF to put on the music stand.

Splitting the hands

Deciding which hand plays a note is what makes piano notation readable. Splitting at middle C is the naive answer, and it gives you a left hand that leaps onto the top staff for one note and back. Midify follows each hand through the piece instead, keeping notes that a hand can reach together and avoiding crossings, so a melody that dips below middle C stays in the right hand.

You can move the split point for the whole piece, and move any note or chord to the other staff with a single key when a passage needs a different hand.

Chords, voices and pedal

Notes played together are written as one chord on one stem. Where one hand holds a note while moving on above or below it, the staff gets a second voice with its own stems, up to two voices per staff, which keeps busy passages readable.

The sustain pedal is not marked in the score. Notes are written at the length you hear them, and you can add pedal markings in your notation app if you need them.

Expressive playing and rubato

Solo piano is rarely played to a click. The beat is tracked through the recording, so slowing down at the end of a phrase still comes out as the same rhythm, not a run of longer note values. If the first beat is in the wrong place, for example because of a pick-up, you can tell the editor which note is beat one and the bars line up from there.

Audio to piano sheet music, from a song or a solo

Piano transcription from a solo recording is the cleanest case: every note in the file belongs to the piano. Song to piano sheet music works too when a song has a piano part, because the piano is separated from the band before it is written out. What it does not do is arrange a song that has no piano into a piano part; it writes down what the piano plays.

For the other parts of the same song, the audio to sheet music converter writes out vocals, guitar, bass and drums as well.

Getting the cleanest piano score

  • Record close to the piano in a quiet room. A phone on the music stand is fine.
  • Solo piano gives a cleaner score than piano inside a full band, but both work.
  • Dense, low chords with lots of pedal are the hardest: check the left hand there.
  • Short solo recordings can be converted free in your browser before you upload anything longer.

Piano to sheet music: questions people ask

Does it split the left and right hand?

Yes. The piano is written on a grand staff with each note given to the hand that would play it. You can change the split point, or move any note to the other hand in the editor.

Can I get an easier version of the piece?

You can make the notation simpler: the readability setting writes fewer, plainer rhythms and drops very short notes. It does not rearrange the music into an easier piano part; that is on the roadmap.

Does it show the sustain pedal?

Not yet. Notes are written at the length they sound, and pedal markings can be added in your notation app.

Can I turn a recording from my phone into piano sheet music?

Yes. Upload the voice memo (M4A works). A quiet room and the phone close to the piano give the best result.

Can I get the piano part of a song with other instruments?

Yes. The piano is separated from the rest of the mix first, then written out on its own grand staff.
