A Samplab alternative for audio to MIDI
Samplab announced that it is going offline: support ended on 17 September 2026, after which no new uploads are possible. If you used it to turn audio into MIDI, Midify covers that part of the job in your browser, with stem separation, drum transcription and a clean-up stage for DAW-ready MIDI. It does not replace everything Samplab did, and this page is clear about which parts.
Choose Samplab if
Samplab was the better fit for editing the notes inside an audio file and hearing the audio change, from a plug-in in your DAW. If you still have its final offline version, it keeps doing that.
Choose Midify if
Choose Midify to keep converting audio to MIDI now that new Samplab uploads have stopped: full songs split into stems, every instrument on its own MIDI track, with a real tempo map, in the browser.

Where each one is better
Samplab does better
- It worked inside your DAW as a VST3 or AU plug-in, as well as a desktop app.
- You could edit the notes of a recording and hear the audio itself change, not only export MIDI.
- It included audio warping and a Resynthesizer on its Complete plan.
- Its final version was offered to work offline after the shutdown.
Midify does better
- It is available, with new uploads every day, and needs nothing installed.
- A whole song becomes a multi-track MIDI file: drums, bass, vocals, piano, guitar and the rest, each on its own track.
- Drums are transcribed into nine kit pieces on General MIDI notes.
- The MIDI carries a detected tempo map, quantize settings and velocities taken from the audio.
- Short clips convert free and unlimited in your browser, with nothing uploaded.
Moving from Samplab
- 1
Before you uninstall, export the MIDI of any Samplab projects you want to keep from its final version.
- 2
For new songs, upload the audio (MP3, WAV, FLAC, AIFF, M4A, OGG or a video) to the audio to MIDI converter and keep the stems you want.
- 3
Check each MIDI track against its stem in the editor, then export one .mid file and drag it into your DAW.
- 4
For a melody in your head, hum to MIDI works in the browser, free.
Samplab alternative: questions people ask
What happened to Samplab?
Samplab's own notice says the service is going offline: support ended on 17 September 2026, after that no new uploads are possible and older versions stop working. It offered a final version that works offline and refunds of unused yearly subscriptions. Today the samplab.com address no longer shows the Samplab site.
Is there a free Samplab alternative?
Midify is free to try: transcribe 3 songs a month and edit them in the browser, and convert short clips in quick mode for free with no limit. Exporting full-song transcriptions needs a paid plan.
Is Midify a plug-in like Samplab?
No. It runs in your web browser. You convert the audio there and drag the .mid file into any DAW, so it works next to Ableton Live, Logic Pro, FL Studio, Cubase and the rest without installing anything.
Can Midify edit the audio the way Samplab did?
No. Midify turns audio into MIDI and lets you edit the MIDI; it does not change the notes inside the original recording.
