Audio to sheet music: turn any recording into a score you can edit
Audio to sheet music in one upload: send a song or a recording and Midify writes it out as notation, a part for every instrument, in the right key and time signature, with the chords over the melody. Check it in the editor, then print it or open it in your notation app.
Try it free: transcribe 3 songs a month and edit every score in the browser.

How to convert audio to sheet music
- 1
Upload the audio
A WAV, MP3, FLAC, AIFF, M4A or OGG file, or a video, up to 10 minutes long. A whole song or a single instrument both work.
- 2
Choose the parts
Vocals, piano, guitar, bass, drums and the rest are separated from the mix, and each one is written out in the layout that instrument reads.
- 3
Check every bar
Play the score against the original, jump to the notes marked as doubtful, and fix them with the keyboard.
- 4
Download it
A PDF of the full score or of single parts, MusicXML for MuseScore, Sibelius, Dorico or Finale, or MIDI.
Each instrument, written the way it is read
A pianist, a guitarist and a drummer do not read the same kind of sheet music, so Midify does not give them the same page. Every part you choose is laid out for its instrument:
- Piano: a grand staff, right hand on top and left hand below, split where a pianist would split it.
- Vocals and melodies: a lead sheet, the tune on one staff with the chord symbols of the song above it.
- Guitar: standard notation with tab underneath, a string and fret for every note.
- Bass: bass clef with four-string tab.
- Drums: a percussion staff with a line or space for each piece of the kit and a legend.
- Everything else in the clef that suits its range, plus a full score with all the parts lined up bar for bar.
Notes are easy. Notation is the hard part.
Recognising which notes were played is only half of turning audio into sheet music. A recording says a note started 12.84 seconds in and lasted 0.31 seconds. Sheet music needs to say it is a dotted eighth on the "and" of beat two in bar seven, in the right key, spelled the right way. Get that wrong and a perfectly good transcription turns into a page of ties, rests and odd tuplets nobody can read.
Midify works from the beat of the song rather than the clock. It finds the downbeats, the time signature and the key, then writes each note against the beat, so a singer drifting a little ahead or a band speeding up in the chorus still comes out as clean rhythms. Triplets are only written where the music really swings that way, and a shuffled groove can be written as straight eighths with a swing marking, the way a session player would expect.
Sharps and flats follow the key and the chords: over an E7 chord you get a G sharp, not an A flat. A readability setting runs from Simple to Detailed, so you can trade every grace note for a page you can sight-read, and see the result change as you move it.
An audio to sheet music converter for every source
Sheet music from audio starts with whatever recording you have. An MP3 or WAV of a finished track, a whole song with a band, or a phone recording of you singing all work; for your own voice, voice to sheet music is the quickest route. For a single instrument, the piano, guitar tab and drum pages explain how each part is written.
If you are choosing between tools rather than converting one song, music transcription software covers how the editor fits into a teacher's or arranger's week. And if what you need is audio to notes for a DAW rather than a page, the audio to MIDI converter gives you the same transcription as MIDI tracks.
Edit before you download
No transcription is perfect, so every score opens in an editor rather than going straight to a PDF. Notes the transcription was unsure about are marked, and one key takes you to the next one. Press play and the original audio, or just that instrument separated from the mix, plays under a cursor that follows the score, so checking a bar takes seconds.
Fixing it is quick too. The arrow keys move a note, the number keys change its length, and a note can be moved to the other hand of a piano part or to another string of a guitar part. Every change is played back as you make it, and undo is always there.
What makes a good result
Some recordings make better sheet music than others. It is worth knowing which before you start:
- A clear recording of one instrument gives the cleanest score. A full mix works, with more to check in the busiest parts.
- Heavy reverb, distortion and very fast passages blur where notes start and stop.
- Free, expressive timing (rubato) is followed, but a steady beat makes rhythms easier to write cleanly.
- Add lyrics and ornament signs in your notation app: words are not written under the notes yet, and trills come out as plain notes.
Audio to sheet music: questions people ask
Can I convert audio to sheet music for free?
You can try it free. The free plan transcribes 3 songs a month, and you can view and edit the full-length score in the browser. Short solo recordings, such as a melody you sing or a piano piece, can be turned into sheet music free in your browser without an account. Downloading full-song scores needs a paid plan. No card is needed to start.
How accurate is AI music transcription?
It depends on the recording. A clean solo instrument comes out close to right; a dense full mix will have bars that need fixing. That is why every score opens in an editor with doubtful notes marked and the original audio one key away. Treat the result as a strong first draft, not a finished engraving.
Can it turn a whole song into sheet music, or only one instrument?
Both. A full song is separated into vocals, piano, guitar, bass, drums and other, and each becomes its own part in a full score. You can also download any part on its own.
Which files can I upload?
WAV, MP3, FLAC, AIFF, M4A or OGG, plus the audio inside MP4, MOV and WebM videos. Songs can be up to 10 minutes and 100 MB (6 minutes on the free plan).
Can I open the result in MuseScore, Sibelius, Dorico or Finale?
Yes. Download MusicXML and it opens in all of them, with the parts, key and time signatures, ties and chord symbols in place. MIDI is there too for apps that prefer it.
Can I convert a YouTube video to sheet music?
Not from a link. Upload an audio or video file that you have the right to use, such as your own recording or a track you bought.
Is it legal to transcribe a copyrighted song?
Transcribing a song for your own study and practice is common. The composition still belongs to its writers, so sharing, selling or performing your transcription can need permission. Our output terms explain this in plain words.
Need MIDI for your DAW instead?
Sheet music is for reading and playing. For producing, the same upload gives you MIDI tracks with a tempo map and real velocities.
