How to convert an MP3 to sheet music

  1. 1

    Upload the MP3

Any bitrate, up to 10 minutes and 100 MB (6 minutes on the free plan). WAV, M4A and FLAC work the same way.

  2. 2

Pick what you want written out

Just the melody with chords, a piano part, or every instrument. Turn the rest off and the job finishes sooner.

  3. 3

    Read it through

Follow the score while the MP3 plays, and correct any note that sounds wrong with a click or a key.

  4. 4

    Print or export

Download a PDF on A4 or Letter, or MusicXML to carry on in MuseScore, Sibelius, Dorico or Finale.

Does an MP3 make good sheet music?

Usually, yes. MP3 compression removes detail at the top of the frequency range, and pitch lives far below that, so the notes of a 192 or 320 kbps MP3 come through almost exactly as they would from the original WAV.

Rhythm is where a poor file shows. Low-bitrate MP3s, ripped from old videos or sent through messaging apps, smear the attack at the start of each note. On the page that means a note can land a sixteenth early or late, or a repeated note can merge into one long one. If you have a better copy, use it; if not, expect a few more bars to tidy in the editor.

PDF, MusicXML or MIDI: which to download

The same score can leave in three forms, each for a different job:

  • PDF to print, practise from or send to a band: the full score, or each part on its own pages, on A4 or Letter.
  • MusicXML to keep editing in notation software: parts, key and time signatures, ties, rests and chord symbols come through intact.
  • MIDI to play the parts back on instruments in a DAW, written from the same score.

Can MuseScore convert an MP3 to sheet music?

MuseScore Studio, the desktop app, opens notation files (MusicXML and MIDI among them), not audio. The quickest route from an MP3 to a score you can keep editing in MuseScore is to convert the MP3 here, download the MusicXML and open it there. The same file works in Sibelius, Dorico, Finale and online editors such as Flat.

MP3 to PDF sheet music in a few minutes

A three to four minute song usually takes a few minutes, depending on how many parts you ask for. The score opens as soon as it is ready, so you can start reading while you decide which parts to print.

WAV to sheet music works the same way

This MP3 to sheet music converter takes WAV, FLAC, AIFF, M4A and OGG files too, and lossless WAV or FLAC gives slightly tidier rhythms because note starts are sharper. Every file goes through the same audio to sheet music converter: the instruments are separated, each is transcribed, and the notes are written against the beat of the song.

MP3 to sheet music: questions people ask

Is there a free MP3 to sheet music converter?

You can try it free: transcribe 3 songs a month and view and edit every score in the browser. Short solo recordings can be converted free in your browser with no account. Downloading full-song scores needs a paid plan.

Can I convert an MP3 to a PDF of the sheet music?

Yes. Download the score as a PDF, the full score or single parts, on A4 or Letter paper.

Can I convert WAV, M4A or a video instead?

Yes. WAV, MP3, FLAC, AIFF, M4A or OGG all work, and so does the audio inside MP4, MOV and WebM videos.

Will a low-quality MP3 work?

It will give you the notes, but rhythms come out less tidy because heavy compression blurs where notes start. Use the best copy you have.

Can MuseScore convert MP3 to sheet music?

MuseScore Studio opens notation files, not audio. Convert the MP3 here, download MusicXML, and open it in MuseScore to keep editing.

Need MIDI for your DAW instead?

Sheet music is for reading and playing. For producing, the same upload gives you MIDI tracks with a tempo map and real velocities.
