Turn a whole song into MIDI, stem by stem

Stem separation and transcription in one job. Midify splits your song into drums, bass, vocals, piano, guitar and the rest, transcribes each stem with a model suited to it, and gives you a multi-track MIDI file with the tempo, key and chords.

How to convert a song to MIDI

  1. 1

    Upload the song

A WAV, MP3, FLAC, AIFF, M4A or OGG file, up to 10 minutes long.

  2. 2

    Separate the stems

The mix is split into six stems: drums, bass, vocals, piano, guitar and other. Choose which ones you want as MIDI.

  3. 3

    Transcribe each stem

Each stem goes to its own transcription step, while the beat, tempo, key and chords are detected from the full mix.

  4. 4

    Edit, compare and export

A/B each MIDI track against its stem, fix what needs fixing, and export.

Why separating first gives better MIDI

When a single model listens to a full mix, the bass guitar, the left hand of the piano and the low notes of the synth pad all sit in the same range, and the model has to decide which instrument each note belongs to. It often gets that wrong, and the result is one tangle of notes.

Separating first turns one hard problem into several easier ones. The bass stem has (mostly) only bass in it, so the bass transcription is cleaner, and it lands on its own track with a bass program number instead of being mixed into everything else.

Separation is not perfect. A little of one instrument can bleed into another stem, which can show up as quiet extra notes. The ghost-note slider in the editor removes those in one move.

What comes back

For every stem you selected:

  • A MIDI track with the right General MIDI program, drums on channel 10.
  • A preview of the separated stem, so you can play the MIDI against it.
  • A confidence score on every note, which drives the clean-up slider.
  • On paid plans, the stem audio itself as a WAV download.

Honest expectations for dense mixes

Full-mix transcription is still an open research problem for everyone. Sparse arrangements, clear bass lines and drums come out well; a wall of distorted guitars and synths will need more editing. That is why every job opens in an editor with A/B playback rather than going straight to a download.

Song to MIDI: questions people ask

Can I get MIDI for every instrument in a song?

You get a MIDI track for each separated stem: drums, bass, vocals, piano, guitar and other. Instruments that share a stem, such as two synths in "other", come out on the same track.

Can I download the separated stems too?

On the Creator and Pro plans, yes, as WAV files. On the free plan you can listen to the stems in the editor and export the MIDI.

How long does a song take?

Usually a few minutes for a 3 to 4 minute song, depending on how many stems you choose and how busy the queue is. Pro jobs go to a priority queue.

Does it detect the key and chords?

Yes. The key and a chord track are detected from the mix. The key drives snap-to-key in the editor and the file name of the export.
